In many recovery programs, cravings are suppressed by giving medications that satisfy the body’s desire for the original drug. For example, a person addicted to heroin may be given methadone. Methadone will keep a heroin addict from going into withdrawal, but it is itself addictive and a drug of abuse for many people. If the methadone is stopped, the cravings start. The individual does not become drug-free and never learns the skills to maintain a drug free life. Thus they are likely to lose the battle to stay off drugs in the future.
